

The Regional Workshop on the Establishment of Low and Intermediate Level Waste Characterization Methodologies and Infrastructures was held from 12 to 16 September 2022, in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia under the framework of the IAEA technical cooperation project RER9154 “Enhancing the Implementation of Integrated Programmes for the Safe Management of Radioactive Waste”.
The purpose of the regional workshop was to discuss the methodologies for waste characterization, considering the origin of the waste, the different waste streams, the situation and the needs of the characterization laboratories, as well as the available analytical technologies and techniques.
The workshop was attended by the technical officer of the IAEA RER/9/154 project, international experts from Hungary, France, as well as the radioactive waste management specialists from Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Ukraine.
During the workshop, the IAEA representative and international experts presented the IAEA safety standards and methodologies related to the characterization of radioactive waste, and the participants made national presentations on the experiences in their countries, which were followed by interactive discussions.
